Bucharest, January 29, 2019 – The project of renovation and modernization of the Newborn Intensive Care Unit of the Emergency Clinical Hospital Constanta is approaching the end stage, as almost 70% of the works are done. The finalized stages are the ones that have had the greatest workload and have requested a special logistics infrastructure. The project is due to be completed in 4-6 months.
„We have concluded the most consistent part of the works on site and we can now say that we are approaching the ending line. The new unit has already caught shape, but we still have some important steps ahead of us. We hope that with the effort made together with our project partners and local authorities, we will keep the estimated time of inauguration of this unit in which the children will be looked after according to the latest standards in neonatal intensive care,” said Angela Galeța, Director of the Vodafone Romania Foundation.
In the next period, the project team will coordinate the installation of the medical consoles in the new unit, the implementation of the telemedicine solution, the installation of doors with double opening system, specially adapted for this space and the windows with shading system.
With the completion of the project, the newborns in Constanta and neighboring counties, Tulcea, Braila, Ialomita and Calarasi will benefit from medical services at the highest existing standards. The department will have state-of-the-art medical equipment and modern facilities, special dedicated spaces for parents and medical staff as well as consultation rooms. The telemedicine solution to be implemented in Constanta will allow real time secure transmission of medical images and parameters and the remote tracking of patients’ vital signs. The new unit will become the second in the country to operate at this level after the Newborn Intensive Care unit at the Marie Curie Hospital in Bucharest, built through a project supported by the Vodafone Romania Foundation in partnership with the Heart of Children Association.
The renovations and modernization works of the Newborn Intensive Care Unit of the Constanta Emergency Clinical Hospital started in August 2017. The project is supported by the Vodafone Romania Foundation, which is handeling the project management and provides a 1.1 million Euro funding in partnership with the Associations Donate Wings and Heart of Children. Each year, 1,000 children with medical problems from the southeastern region of the country receive medical care in the Constanţa unit. In this region, infant mortality is the highest in the country and three times higher than the European average.
The Vodafone Romania Foundation is a Romanian nongovernmental charitable organization, established in 1998, which operates separately and independently from the Vodafone Romania SA’s business. During its over 20 years of activity, Vodafone Romania Foundation has funded 1,132 programs run by 730 NGOs throughout the country, in the fields of healthcare, education and social services. The “Give Wings” Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting charitable projects that can really contribute the proper treatment of patients in the Romanian public healthcare system. The Association seeks to implement projects in the healthcare field, aimed at improving patients’ healing and survival chances. The Association built the Department of Pediatric Onco-hematology and Rheumatology at Constanta County Hospital, which handles the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of sick children from the South-East region of Romania. The Children’s Heart Association has been helping children with serious illnesses, especially heart conditions, since 2006. The Association has built the most up-to-date medical facility in the whole Romanian public healthcare system, at the Marie Curie Hospital: the Center for Excellence in Cardiac Surgery (a project worth over 3,5 million Euro, of which 1,6 million Euro were collected and invested by the Children’s Heart Association alone) and the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (a project worth more than 2,1 million Euro, developed with the support of the Vodafone Romania Foundation, to which the Children’s Heart Association’s contribution amounted to over 700,000 Euros), which is to be fitted this year with the first breast milk bank ever built in Romania. The Association has also renovated at the same hospital the departments of cardiology and neurosurgery, has refurbished and equipped the neurosurgery theater and is continuing to support, including financially, all these hospital wards, thus helping dozens of young patients in need of medical care.
